Networking and Mentoring Opportunities

Meet and connect with new colleagues and friends at the 2022 AMS-SEM-SMT Annual Meeting! Participate in speed mentoring, speed networking, and/or the AMS Buddy Program. All three programs provide unique and valuable ways to network and engage with colleagues that share your professional and intellectual interests. There’s something for everyone! Learn more about speed mentoring sessions, speed networking sessions, and the Buddy Program below.

Speed Mentoring
Speed mentoring sessions are scheduled for Friday, 11 November from 12:30-2:00pm during the 2022 AMS-SEM-SMT Joint Annual Meeting. Mentors and mentees will be randomly placed into small groups and shuffled into new discussions every 8-10 minutes. (NOTE: Students may not volunteer to serve as mentors. Mentee seats are contingent on the number of volunteer mentors, so space is limited.) Speed mentoring is open to all Annual Meeting attendees.

Deadline to sign up: 11:59pm ET, 15 September 2022

Speed Networking
Speed networking sessions are scheduled for Saturday, 12 November from 12:30-2:00pm during the 2022 AMS-SEM-SMT Joint Annual Meeting. Participants will be randomly placed into small groups and shuffled into new discussions every 8-10 minutes. Speed networking is open to all Annual Meeting attendees.

Deadline to sign up: 11:59pm ET, 15 September 2022

AMS Buddy Program
The AMS Committee on Career–Related Issues (CCRI) will sponsor a “Conference Buddy Program” at the Joint Annual Meeting. The Buddy Program Meet-up is scheduled for Thursday, 10 November from 1:00-2:00pm. This program is designed to extend a warm and hearty welcome to new members or those attending a national meeting for the first time by pairing them with experienced members of the Society to help break some of the formal “ice” and demystify the meeting in both the social and professional realm. The AMS Buddy Program is only open to AMS members.

Deadline to sign up: 11:59pm ET, 15 September 2022

Coordinators
Deborah Heckert and Catherine Mayes will coordinate the AMS Buddy Program this year. Registration for the 2022 AMS-SEM-SMT Joint Annual Meeting is required to participate. Mentors and mentees must complete the buddy registration form by 15 September 2022.

Purpose
The Buddy Program offers a simple and informal means at the Joint Annual Meeting for established AMS members to welcome and briefly connect with newer members of the organization – and to open the door for additional social and professional interaction for the less-experienced attendees who may find the conference experience intimidating.

Some ways the conference buddy might assist the newer AMS member include: being a friendly and supportive contact shortly before, during, and perhaps after the meeting; answering questions about the structure of the AMS, the purposes of the conference, and how these goals take place in the various forums (paper sessions, panel sessions, meetings, job interviews, etc.); and making conversation and introductions at a social or networking event.

The CCRI purposefully chose a rather light-hearted name for this program to emphasize the informality, and, we hope, fun, of the conference buddy connection – its purpose is not for detailed career advice, academic mentorship, intense discussions of research, or for getting inside scoops on other institutions.

Those interested in registering for the Buddy Program should consult the applicable guidelines, either the guidelines for mentees or the guidelines for mentors.
